UX Manager • 2021–2022

Under the Retail org at Shopify, I led the Design Systems and Extensibility teams which included Staff, IC, Content, and Intern Designers. My team’s missions were to enable internal and external developers to design and build the best experiences for Shopify’s merchants. My teams collaborated with feature development teams, researchers, engineers, as well as third party developers.

Based on my experience as a UX manager, a good design leadership strategy revolves around the five pillars listed above. These are the tools I use to help build successful cross-functional, autonomous, and accountable teams, as well as help designers maximize their potential.

Some of my work as UX Manager

Design Systems

As the leader of the Polaris for Retail Design Systems team, I was responsible for defining product quality, consistency, and reliability; extending components for internal and external teams; improving collaboration between engineering and design; and building for diverse form factors and environments.

Accessibility

I built accessibility into React Native components, ensuring internal and external developers could utilize critical functionality  My team instrumented shipping guidelines, adding accessibility accountability checks at every PR, and introduced inclusive design principles to educate Shopify UX on accessible design practices.

Extensibility

I was responsible for driving the growth of Shopify POS as a platform and spearheading efforts to increase platform flexibility and improve partner platform onboarding and documentation.

Quality

I championed the adoption of internal quality assurance techniques by all of our R&D teams. Additionally, I created a tool that would simplify internal quality control, enhancing app quality across all Shopify buyer and seller experiences.
